SOCIAL ACCOUNTABILITY POLICY – THE SILK FACTORY 

This document is the social policy for The Silk Factory.  This Social policy has been formulated based on the guidelines set out by the Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS) and through consultation with the staff and management of The Silk Factory. 

This document has been circulated amongst all senior management in the company with the intention for this to be strictly implemented wherever possible.

1.EMPLOYMENT IS FREELY CHOSEN

There should be no forced or bonded labour

 Employees are free to leave after giving 30 days notice

 At time of hiring, Original ID of employees will be seen for verification, photocopy of the ID will be kept on record and the original will be returned immediately


2.CHILD LABOUR WILL NOT BE USED


Children under the age of 18 years will not be employed in the firm, and all official ID of the potential employees will be screened to check their age.  At the time of hiring a copy of proof of age will be kept on record to ensure that the age of the employee is over 18 years.

3.COMPLAINTS AND REDRESSAL SYSTEM FOR EMPLOYEES / THE RIGHT TO COLLECTIVE BARGAINING WILL BE RESPECTED
 

The firm has appointed a senior manager with whom all employees are able to discuss any complaints in regards to working conditions, salary, management, or other worker problems.  This senior manager has been appointed to help the workers express their complaints and improve the working conditions if necessary, and to communicate on behalf of the workers with the partners of the company

The workers will be free to organise themselves and to express their complaints or negotiate salaries collectively

4.DISCRIMINATION IN THE WORKPLACE

 
No discrimination will be tolerated in the workplace in terms of hiring, compensation, based on race, caste, ethnic, religion, age, disability, gender, marital status, sexual orientation, political affiliation, social background etc. In particular, workers shall not be harassed or disciplined on any of the grounds listed above.  Issues around discrimination and sensitisation will be discussed during worker committee meetings.

 
5.SAFE AND HYGENIC WORKING CONDITIONS FOR ALL WORKERS

 
It is the goal of the organization to provide a safe and hygienic working environment for all of the staff, and for clients, and a senior member of staff is appointed with this responsibility.

Vulnerable individuals such as - but not limited to - young workers, new and expecting mothers and persons with disabilities, shall receive special protection.

During pandemics, relevant PPE kits will be provided to workers, and the same will be recorded.

The organization will ensure adequate medical assistance to employees if needed.

During worker committee meetings workers will be encouraged to detect, assess, avoid and respond to potential threats to the health and safety of workers in the organisation’s work environment.  Effective measures will be taken to prevent workers from having accidents, injuries or illnesses, arising from, associated with, or occurring during work on the basis of the risk assessments being made during worker committee meetings and risks assessed and identified by the management.

    • Workers will receive regular and recorded basic first aid, health and safety training incl. fire prevention training and evacuation drills.
    • Workers will be given access to clean toilet facilities and to potable water, a clean food consuming area and a sanitary area/ facility for food storage
6.FAIR REMUNERATION AND WORKING HOURS


Wages and benefits paid for a standard working week will be higher than the state minimum wage and shall meet all other national and state requirements.

Working hours will comply with national and state laws.  Workers will not be required to work in excess of 48 hours per week and all over time will be voluntary.  Workers will be allowed to have adequate rest breaks, and will always get a minimum of one full day off during the working week.

Physical abuse, the threat of physical abuse, sexual or other harassment and verbal abuse or other forms of intimidation is prohibited.

All worker disciplinary measures will be recorded.


7. ETHICAL BUSINESS BEHAVIOUR

Our Company and our company representatives will not be involved in any act of corruption, extortion or embezzlement, nor in any form of bribery - including but not limited to - the promising, offering, giving or accepting of any improper monetary or other incentive.

The company will use and otherwise process any personal information (including that from workers, business partners, customers and consumers in their sphere of influence) with reasonable care. The collection, use and other processing of personal information will comply with all national and state privacy and information security laws and regulatory requirements.

The above points will be discussed regularly at our worker committee meetings and worker training sessions where appropriate.
